Situation: full sun
Origin: Mediterranean climate
Fertilizer: Bonsai are normally fertilized during their growing season, which is usually during
spring and
autumn, except for those of tropical origin that must also be fertilized in summer, and if winter protection is provided and they are still active, we will also fertilize them.
After spring budding, just at the moment when the leaves have matured, the tree is ready to receive the fertilizer that we provide, before this moment it is useless and harmful to fertilize them.
It is also harmful for the
bonsai to pay it for example after a
transplant , a
defoliate , or in cases of
extreme weakness , since they can lead to death.
Fertilizing during flowering is also not advisable because it can cause the leaves to drop.
To summarize: we must bear in mind that an excess of fertilizer is more harmful than the lack of it, and that the most important time to provide it is in autumn, when the tree / bush accumulates reserves to spend the winter and carry out a vigorous sprouting during the following spring
Transplant: As a general rule
it is advisable every
2 years, in spring and summer. This operation is vital for trees that live in
pots , because over time the land degrades due to the action of water, fertilizers, root pressure, making it a kind of paste that prevents air circulation and retains moisture, thus suffocating the roots, which causes the death of the tree, this is the
main cause of the death of bonsai.
Transplant guidelines:- For young trees that we want to cultivate, allowing them a great growth, we will transplant every 1 or 2 years, with the necessary tools to prune and form, and using a coarse-grained soil, which can be 100% Akadama substrate or mixed with a 20% volcanic gravel ,
- For already formed trees that only require maintenance, we will take a little longer, every 3 to 4 years, and we will do it with fine-grained soil.
The ideal time is when the Bonsai is going to start sprouting, after the winter dormancy period, we can also do it after defoliation
Pruning and pinching: Pinching: we understand by pinching the cut that is made on the young branches of the growth of the year, it is like a complementary pruning and serves to maintain the
formation of the tree and also also serves to
obtain more ramifications, thereby balancing the strength of the shoots, slowing down the strongest and favoring the weak.Generally it is done with
scissors , although in already formed trees, we only want to maintain the silhouette or thicken it we will do it with our
fingers . It is done when the stem has reached 4 to 6 sheets, then cut leaving two sheets.
Pruning: We understand by pruning the cutting of the branches of the growth of previous years, unlike the pinching which is the cutting of young branches of the current year. The best time to practice pruning is one in which we can obtain a quick response of the tree, and as far as possible we will choose the spring
Age and measurements are approximate. The color and shape of the pot can vary from that of the photo. Remember that a bonsai is a living being, and therefore the images that appear represent the article but it is not exactly the one of the article that you will receive.
